Moraine lake threatens to wash away Khorgos Center
ASTANA. February 1. KAZINFORM /Askar Bimendin/ A moraine lake stills threatens to wash away the International Center of Border Cooperation "Khorgos", Kazakh Minister of Emergencies Vladimir Bozhko told a board meeting of his ministry on Wednesday.
"An expedition to the headwaters of the Khorgos River achieved an alarming result. The significant degradation of glaciers resulted in the formation of a moraine lake, which we have called "Kapkan" (trap), with a water volume of more than a million cubic meters. This lake is a big threat to "Khorgos" International Center of Border Cooperation," the Minister said.
According to him, the development of design specifications and estimates for building protective facilities to ensure safety of the border center and Khorgos village is underway.
